But when I discussed my issue with friends, other queer men of color, they all said I have a type: white men. I grew up closeted in a very religious community. The only gay people I saw in the media were white, and the few Black queer celebrities that I knew of, like Wanda Sykes and Michael Sam, were in interracial relationships.

My childhood in the Black church led me to believe that Black people were inherently homophobic — a myth — and that the only Black men who were gay were on the down low or infected with HIV — also a myth. They were estranged from our family, partly because of their health and their sexual orientation.

A kind, smart man who moves me, might be able to rock with me, regardless of race or ethnicity. The vast majority of my Black girlfriends exclusively and purposely date Black men, so I get a lot of questions about my UN-friendly dating roster and most of those questions are about the white dudes. I grew up in a small town in the 90’s, where I was the only non-white girl in my class at school and my skin colour was a curiosity rather than a threat.
